This is news that got me really excited today!! The FDA will be banning Trans Fats. The use of trans fats in foods has already dropped 75% since the 1990’s. People wonder what is the difference between regular fats and trans fats. To make it simple other fats have health benefits, there is not one thing that is health about trans fats. The FDA is hoping that by eliminating trans fats that 20,000 heart attacks and 7000 deaths will be avoided each year.
I was shocked today while watching CNN. They were discussing the trans fat ban and Wolf Blitzer actually asked “well won’t this affect the flavor of our food??” It is questions like this that make people feel discouraged about eating healthier foods. The whole thing with trans fats is that it helps to cook foods faster not taste better. It goes back to how society needs things to be faster all the time. Is getting something quicker worth your health or even your life?
Many fast foods have already eliminated trans fats from their menu items over the years already. What food still have trans fats in them? Most of the foods of convenience have trans fats. Some of them are microwaved popcorn, frozen pizza, refrigerated doughs, store bought cookies, non dairy creamers and so many other grocery items. The FDA is hoping to have all trans fats phased out in the next 12 months or less. Imported foods will be expected to follow the same guidelines as well. What are your thought on this ban?
