New York City Fashion Week has crept up on me this year. I think I did not notice it coming because last year it started off with Fashion Night Out. For me I loved the event, granted I only bought the promotional T-shirt.
Fashion Night Out (FNO) was created in 2009 as a way to get people out and shopping, during the recession. It was meant to get people excited about fashion. The problem is over the years it has more become a spectacle. Free cocktails, celebrity signings and passed hors d’oeuvres. Designers and shops are spending so much money hosting the events (an expense which often falls within days of spring shows and presentations) that sponsors Vogue, the CFDA, and NYC & Co. have decided to call it quits, at least for now, letting designers focus on the stuff that really matters rather than blow it all on one big party that’s not even generating much income.
The event will still take place in many cities around the world, just not here in New York City. I really enjoyed it last year, I hope that they will get it back up and running in the future!
